PTI case labels and voice pick codes
The Produce Traceability Initiative label is the North American standard for identifying produce cases: GTIN and lot in a barcode, plus a voice pick code for the warehouse.

What a PTI case label contains
| Element | Purpose |
|---|---|
| GS1-128 barcode with (01) GTIN and (10) lot | Machine-readable product and lot identification |
| Human-readable GTIN and lot | Manual lookup when a barcode is damaged |
| Pack date or harvest date (optional) | Freshness and rotation |
| Voice pick code | 4-digit check value for voice-directed picking |
| Company name, product, size, country of origin | Buyer and regulatory information |

From case label to full traceability
The PTI label identifies a case. The SSCC label identifies the pallet. FSMA 204 adds the traceability lot code and the records behind it. CHAIN-TRACE puts all of that behind one QR code the buyer can scan.
- Labels generated with the right GTIN, lot and date for each customer
- Pallet SSCC linked to every case and lot on it
- TLC and KDEs sent with the shipment for FSMA 204
- CHAIN-TRACE QR on the pallet label or BOL

Questions
What is a voice pick code?
A 4-digit code printed large on PTI case labels, calculated from the GTIN, lot and (optionally) pack date. Warehouse staff using voice picking read it aloud to confirm the right case and lot.
Does Producepak print PTI labels?
Yes. PTI case labels, SSCC pallet labels and customer-specific formats are printed automatically with the correct GTIN, lot and dates.
